Life=Life Project... the Story

Tuesday, December 28, 2010
(This post was originally posted in an old blog Kyle and Graham started when Life Equals was a different branding. For simplicity, the company and product names have been updated. No need to create confusion. We thought we'd share these posts as a tribute to where we came from, and also to share a little bit larger view of our story. Enjoy!)

Over the past year we have received a lot of questions about the story behind the Life=Life Project. I thought I would take a few minutes to give a deeper picture of how it came to be the center of what we do at Life Equals.

All Life Equals products are built to address the everyday needs in our lives. The first formula that Kyle, Abby and I designed (LIFE= Focus+Energy) was created to provide the natural focus & energy that we ourselves needed. But even as we were pouring our energy into designing the focus and energy formula, we knew in the back of our minds that somehow our products and business could benefit not only the direct customers who took it, but also the global community at large. We knew what products we wanted to create; we just didn’t have a grasp on how we could leverage them to change the world.

So, what do you do when you face uncertainty... you move forward believing that the answers will present themselves in good time. With that in mind, we worked diligently to create natural products that are healthy and helpful for daily life. We knew we would have a sudden burst of creativity on how to practically extend benefits to those in need.

The creative inspiration we needed came a couple months later.

At church one Sunday evening my friend Justin shared about an orphanage in Mozambique at which he had lived for a summer. As he described their needs, he mentioned that one of their biggest was simple children’s multivitamins. Being in a country where it is a challenge to have a reliable diet, vitamins are used to normalize nutrient intake and ensure that proper levels are maintained. Unfortunately, outside of the United States supplements and vitamins are expensive, of low quality, & difficult to obtain.

Sitting there I realized that our business had the tools, connections and expertise to help this orphanage and hundreds of similar organizations throughout the world. As we researched further, we stumbled across the work of Vitamin Angels and their amazing track record of supplying children’s multivitamins to undernourished children. We sent them an email to share the idea of the Life=Life Project and pitch a partnership with them rather than creating our own non-profit. They dug the idea and the Life=Life Project was born.

We are absolutely thrilled to be partnering with Vitamin Angels and doing our part to change the world. Thank you so much for joining us in this movement.

The following is the mission statement for the Life=Life Project; we hope you agree:
By partnering with the improvements happening in your life, Life Equals betters the world through the LIFE=LIFE Project – For every purchase you make, Life Equals will provide an equal amount of children’s multivitamins to an undernourished child through our partnership with Vitamin Angels. LIFE=LIFE one vitamin at a time.

In the end, it is very simple: a better you creates a better world.

what Life Equals... equals

Over the course of the last two years, as we’ve created and developed our first product, we have met with lots of people to learn how they live and how our product can help them live better. In these meetings, they told us their story — what is going on in their lives, what’s important, what they need and want life to be. Simply, they shared what their life equals and what they hope for it to equal.

For our business, life equals helping you improve your life. We believe that as this happens, you’ll improve the world around you. In other words, a better you creates a better world.

We create healthy solutions to everyday problems that help you live the life you want and need.

As a result of the shift in this branding, we have expanded our product offerings.  We will soon offer not only our specialty supplement products but also everyday essentials.

Our specialty supplements are designed to be natural solutions to everyday problems.  Our first product is LIFE= Focus+Energy.  Coming soon is LIFE= Calm+Serene and LIFE= Herbal Blend.

The Everyday Essentials are built to provide a daily nutritional base.  We are currently developing our LIFE= Men’s Multi-Vitamin, LIFE= Women’s Multi-Vitamin, and LIFE= Buffered C.

We’re really excited by all that’s happening and thrilled
to share it with you.  Keep checking back in the weeks to come.

We're geeking out a little.

In the midst of everything else happening, we've been working with Ben from Basement Ink to develop some sweet Life Equals shirts.  We received the mockups earlier this week and are pumped to share the design.

We'll sell three different shirt styles (crew, v-neck & wicking althletic) and each will come in both male & female versions. The shirts will be a part of the Life=Life Project so we'll be providing children's multi-vitamins to an undernourished child for every shirt we sell.

Here's a quick preview of the Men's V:

We can't wait for their arrival so that we can start sporting them around town.
Furthermore, we can't wait for their arrival so that you can start sporting them around town!

Ok. Geek out complete.

Over the last weeks we have been alluding to changes in our company, specifically around our branding.  We are now proud to announce the fruit of our labor, our new company brand: Life Equals.

As we’ve learned how to better tell our story and began to express our Why?, we realized our company is all about Life: making lives better through our products and the world better through our company.

More information in the next days, but for a teaser of what's to come check out our soon to be new home: life-equals.com.

Why? How? What?

Over the last year we have been sharing our ideas and products with people and feverishly writing down their responses.  Through this process we were led to a TEDTalk that helped us begin to understand the process of: Why? How? What?

Why do we care about this idea so much?

How do we express this through our business?

What are the products to convey our beliefs and meet peoples’ needs?

The vast majority of the companies providing products and services today think in the reverse order: “What are we going to build?  How are we going to market it?  Why… ah we’ll get to that later.”  This is why most of them do not have a community folded around their companies like Apple and TOM’s Shoes.

.

To work out the Why? How? What? we poured our beliefs, ideas, and passions onto paper to help us instill the answer to those questions into our products.  What resulted from those sessions was a better understanding of why we are doing this, how we hope to convey it, and what our products should be to fully represent us.

In other words, we learned how to tell our story.
